Adaptation

One of my nieces discovered she had numerous allergies after being hospitalized for a severe asthma attack. Tests showed she had negative reactions to an unbelievable amount of different things. She decided to limit the foods she eats in an effort to help keep the problems at bay.

I had an interesting conversation with her just a few days ago. She talked to me about mixing up her own toothpaste, made from coconut oil and other natural things (and no fluoride). She said she feels like her teeth are cleaner now than they have ever been. She also talked about making other personal hygiene products like deodorant, shampoo and soap.

My niece is not a conspiracy theorist, but because of her health issues she is taking her health into her own hands. Making natural products she can use to keep herself healthy is just an extension of that. In a nutshell, she is recognizing the problems as they come up in her own life and is changing in order to meet her needs. She is adapting.

It strikes me that this is a great metaphor for life on planet Earth. Real change does not always happen through protest or wars. It doesn't come from some hero riding in on his white horse to save the day. It comes from people who recognize everyday challenges and work to solve those problems. Yes, it is a slow process, but it is also a sound one. Small changes over time are much easier to make than severe changes all at once. This is adaptation at its very core, and we are taking the necessary steps for survival, whether we understand their significance or not.

Adaptation is the process of understanding what it takes to survive and changing oneself to fit the new paradigm. It is subtle and overlooked, but it is happening as I write this. It is the process we use to change the world! Don't underestimate it!!!
